PHOTOS: 2 Roller Coasters Go Up as 1 Comes Down in Disney World

We’re back for our weekly roundup of construction updates from Disney World!

Main Street Railroad Station

There’s almost always some sort of construction going on when you’re visiting the parks and resorts. And, while some of the projects have a quick turnaround, others are going on for months or even YEARS (we’re looking at you TRON 👀). But, no matter what it is, we’ve got our eyes on it and this week we’re bringing you a look at work on TWO new roller coasters, one disappearing attraction, and more. Let’s get to it!

Magic Kingdom

TRON: Lightcycle Run

We’re starting off with a construction project that we really don’t when it will ever end in Magic Kingdom. That’s right, we’re headed to TRON: Lightcycle Run in Tomorrowland! We’ve been bringing you almost weekly updates on the construction of the exterior track and this week it’s still looking like there’s a lot of work to be done.

TRON construction

But, rest assured, crews are out here pretty much EVERY day moving us closer to our eventual first ride.

They’re hard at work!

Keep in mind that this coaster is part indoor, part outdoor, meaning that there’s a lot of construction that we can’t see right now. So, half of it is a mystery for now and Disney has yet to share an opening timeline for the attraction.

EPCOT

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

We swung by EPCOT (via the monorail, of course) to get a birds-eye view of the construction progress on the other new roller coaster coming to Disney World — Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. The last time we checked in, Disney was just beginning to add landscaping to the area

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind construction

…and now it’s certainly coming together!

Things Are Moving Along!

Here’s a look at the area closer to the building too.

Construction

It looks like the groundwork for the Xandarian Ship (which will sit out front in the middle of the triangle) is almost ready for landing, so we’ll keep an eye out for more progress! The attraction is set to debut in 2022.

Learn More About the Opening Timeline for This Roller Coaster HERE!

World Showcase

Back in World Showcase, there was some shifting of Food & Wine Festival booths because the area between the Morocco and France Pavilions has finally opened! Previously, there were large construction walls blocking off the area…

What is used to look like here…

…but they were cleared and now the Brazil booth has returned to its home.

The walls are down and the Brazil booth has moved!

The EPCOT Food & Wine Festival is set to end on November 20th, so there’s still a bit of time left to taste your way around the world!

Check Out What You Can Find at the Brazil Booth HERE!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Primeval Whirl

It’s not all that often that we get to see a ride completely removed from Disney World, so it should come as no surprise that we always make it a point to stop by Primeval Whirl in DinoLand, U.S.A. to see how it’s going. And, every day there’s a little something else that’s been removed.

See Ya Later, Primeval Whirl!

But, the entrance sign is holding on for dear life and can still be found behind construction walls.

Primeval Whirl Construction

Disney hasn’t revealed what could take the place of this extinct attraction once it’s removed.

Disney Resorts

Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort

If you’ve stayed at Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort recently, you’ve probably noticed some pretty major changes in the lobby area. Disney has removed the long check-in desk that used to be here and now you can find smaller “pods” that make it easier for Cast members to greet guests in line and provide a more personalized experience.

All-Star Movies Lobby

And, while about half of the check-in desks are now open, there is still some construction work going on.

All-Star Movies Construction

So, be prepared to dodge some walls for a little while longer when you stay here.

Disney’s BoardWalk

A few months ago, we noticed that Disney was replacing some sidewalk areas at the BoardWalk and this week a few more construction walls popped up.

Disney’s BoardWalk Construction

We could see that there was some painting being done on the exterior of the building and the sidewalk was getting some TLC. But, if you’re looking for an ATM, that’s unavailable right now.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

And, lastly, we stopped over at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge to check out the greatest Halloween treat glow-up of 2021. And, after demolishing the new(ish) cupcake, we looked up to see that the outdoor dining patio at the Roaring Fork is now blocked off by construction walls.

Construction outside of the Roaring Fork

Disney often updates smaller areas at the resorts, so it likely won’t be unavailable for too long but we’ll keep an eye out!

And, that’s it for all the construction updates from this week! Be sure to stay tuned to DFB for more of the latest updates on what’s coming to (and leaving) Disney World soon!

Disney Shares TWO New Recipes Just in Time for Halloween!

On Halloween night, Disney’s Freeform is wrapping up its 31 Nights of Halloween with a double feature of Hocus Pocus and Nightmare Before Christmas!

©Disney

To coincide with this double feature, Disney shared two new Halloween recipes!

For the first movie of the night, Nightmare Before Christmas how about a Pumpkin Roll to go with the Pumpkin King? Disney shared the recipe for their delicious Pumpkin Pecan Cheesecake Roll from Amorette’s Patisserie in Disney Springs!

Pumpkin Pecan Cheesecake Roll

Ingredients:

Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake

  • 2 1/2 cups cream cheese, softened
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs plus 1 egg yolk
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla paste
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

Dulce Nutmeg Chocolate Mousse

  • 2 1/2 gelatin sheets
  • 1 cup dulce blonde chocolate or milk chocolate
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 cup heavy cream, divided
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 teaspoons nutmeg

Pecan Chiffon

  • 1 cup cake flour
  • 2 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar, divided
  • 3 tablespoons pecan halves, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 4 egg whites

Orange White Chocolate Glaze

  • 1 1/2 cup white chocolate
  • 1 1/2 cup cocoa butter chips
  • 2 tablespoons orange food coloring
  • 1/4 teaspoon brown food coloring

Topping

  • 10-12 small chocolate sticks
  • 10-12 white chocolate pearls

Recipe:

Pumpkin Cheesecake

1. Preheat oven to 200°F. Spray 10-inch cake pan with non-stick spray and set aside. Fill a 9×13-inch pan half way with water and place in bottom of oven.

2. Combine cream cheese and sugar in bowl of mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Beat on medium speed until smooth. Add eggs and yolk, one at a time, until fully incorporated.

3. Whisk sour cream, heavy cream, vanilla paste, and pump- kin pie spice together in a small bowl. Add to mixer and beat on medium speed for 1 minute, until fully blended into cream cheese mixer.

4. Pour into prepared pan. Bake in center of oven for 45 minutes. Rotate pan and bake another 40 minutes. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate overnight.

Dulce Nutmeg Chocolate Mousse

1. Cut gelatin sheets into smaller pieces and place in small bowl. Cover with cold water and allow gelatin to bloom for 5 minutes.

2. Melt chocolate in microwave. Set aside and keep warm.

3. Beat egg yolks in small bowl and set aside.

4. Drain water from gelatin and combine with 1/2 cup of the heavy cream and all of the milk in saucepan. Cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, until gelatin is melted and cream is hot, but not boiling. Slowly whisk 1/2 of the warm cream mixture into the egg yolks. Add tempered egg yolks into pan and cook for 2-3 minutes over low heat, until cream begins to thicken.

5. Pour over melted chocolate and stir until smooth. Add nutmeg and stir until incorporated. Cool for 30 minutes at room temperature.

6. Whip remaining cup of heavy cream to soft peaks. Gently fold into cooled chocolate mixture.

7. Refrigerate at least 4 hours.

Pecan Chiffon

1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Spray a half sheet pan with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

2. Sift cake flour, baking powder, salt, and 1 cup of sugar into a medium bowl. Stir in chopped pecans. Set aside.

3. Combine oil, eggs, milk, and vanilla paste in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Beat on medium speed until combined. Slowly add reserved cake flour mix and beat on medium speed until smooth. Set aside.

4. Whip egg whites, remaining 1/2 cup of sugar, and cream of tartar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment until stiff peaks form.

5. Gently fold egg whites into reserved batter until incorporated. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 14-16 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

6. Cool completely before removing from pan.

Assemble the Roll

1. Remove chiffon from cake pan and place on large cutting board. Whip refrigerated cheesecake in bowl of mixer fitted with paddle attachment on medium speed until soft. Evenly spread on the chiffon.

2. Roll chiffon into an 18-inch long log. Wrap in parchment and plastic wrap. Freeze for 1 hour.

3. Remove from freezer and unwrap. Cut off ends and dis- card, then slice roll into 12 1-inch pieces.

4. Place 2 1/2-inch pumpkin-shaped silicon molds on a bak- ing sheet. Fill each mold with 2 tablespoons dolce nutmeg mousse. Place one slice of the cheesecake roll in each mold. It may be necessary to trim the edges of the cheesecake roll to fit inside of the mold. Fill with additional mousse to cover each roll. Press firmly with a spatula. Freeze for at least 4 hours.

Orange White Chocolate Glaze

1. Melt white chocolate in glass bowl in microwave on 50% power for 30 seconds. Stir chocolate. Repeat until melted.

2. Melt cocoa butter nibs in separate bowl. Pour melted cocoa butter over white chocolate chips. Add orange and brown food coloring. If necessary, return to microwave for 15 seconds at a time to melt again.

3. Keep melted until ready to glaze domes.

To Serve

1. Remove cheesecake rolls from freezer. Carefully remove from molds onto a wire rack.

2. Pour orange chocolatey glaze over each cheesecake roll.

3. Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Once chocolate has set, dip bottoms of the pumpkins in the orange glaze and set on wax paper.

4. Carefully remove any excess chocolate glaze from sides before serving.

5. Decorate with a chocolate stick and white chocolate pearl on each pumpkin.

Whew! This is a complicated one! We’ve spotted this one at Amorette’s Patisserie, a Disney Springs spot with a reputation for delicious treats! It was one of many Halloween desserts that arrived at Amorette’s for the spooky season!

For the second feature of the night, Hocus Pocus, Disney shared a recipe for the Witch’s Flight cocktail trio! This trio of drinks features Orange Tangerine, Green Apple, and Blackberry flavors with Rye Whiskey, making a simple and delicious flight of fruity cocktails.

Drink up!

Ingredients:

  • .05 oz. orange tangerine beverage syrup
  • .05 oz. green apple beverage syrup
  • .05 oz. blackberry beverage syrup
  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 2 oz. lime sour
  • 1 oz. white grape juice

Recipe:

1. Pour each of the beverage syrups into three separate flight glasses.

2. Combine whiskey, lime sour, and white grape juice in cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain equally into each of the flight glasses. If needed, give a quick stir.

We’ve also tried this same flight over at Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar and really enjoyed it! The drinks are a bit on the sweet side and they’re perfect for whiskey fans, although they’re not your typical whiskey cocktails.

Witch’s Flight

Generally, these drinks are similar to whiskey sours and our favorite was the Orange Tangerine!

The BEST (and WORST) Things We Ate at Disney World in October!

Another month has come and gone in Disney World! Can you believe we’re only two months away from 2022? Seriously…where has 2021 gone?! Before we can dive headfirst into the holiday season (we’ve already made our holiday season treats list and checked it twice!), we have to revisit our top and bottom picks for the food and drink items we tried in the month of October!

Cinderella Castle

This month, to no one’s surprise, is chock-full of treats from the 50th Anniversary Celebration. Let’s revisit the menu items we would gladly try again and again, as well as those items we would rather not remember.

The Best

Steakhouse 71 Stack Burger from Steakhouse 71

This month brought with it the grand opening of one of the newest dining spots in Disney World, Steakhouse 71! The restaurant took the place of The Wave at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and it serves an exceptional breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

It’s cozy in here, we loved it!

While we enjoyed a variety of menu items across all three meals, the HUGE standout to our team was the Steakhouse 71 Stack Burger, which you can order off of the lunch menu! It’s made with a signature blend of Beef, American Cheese, Lemon Aïoli, Red Onion, and House-made Pickles on a Brioche Bun. Also, while it is not listed on the menu, the burger patty is topped with a piece of Pork Belly.

We’re tearing up with how beautiful that cheese is

Sound tasty? That’s because it IS. This is a VERY delicious menu item with plenty of cheese to keep anyone happy. The signature blend used for the patty was on the fattier side, giving us a gloriously greasy feast we’ll definitely go back and try again. It’s $20 and worth every penny!

Click here to read our full review of LUNCH from Steakhouse 71!

Monte Cristo Sandwich from The Plaza Restaurant

The classic Monte Cristo Sandwich has long been a Disneyland staple, and we’ve struggled over the years to find a Disney World equivalent worthy of Cafe Orleans’ company! So when we heard that The Plaza Restaurant was debuting its own Monte Cristo for the 50th Anniversary Celebration, we knew we had to check it out.

Monte Cristo Sandwich

This sandwich is made with Deep-fried Funnel Cake Batter, Bacon, Roasted Turkey, and Provolone sprinkled with EARidescent and Powdered Sugar served with a side of Strawberry Jam. As one would expect with a Monte Cristo, this plate was cheesy, greasy, and delicious.

Monte Cristo!

It’s $18 and by far one of our favorite menu items brought to the parks for the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Click here to read our review of the new 50th Anniversary menu items at Plaza Restaurant!

Tropical Serenade from Aloha Isle

Disney World’s 50th Anniversary Celebration brought a whopping 150 NEW menu items across the parks and resorts. That’s a lot of sweet and savory food and drink items to rank, but one of the top choices from Magic Kingdom for our team was the Tropical Serenade from Aloha Isle!

Tropical Serenade

This frozen treat is made with POG Juice (passion fruit, orange, and guava juice) with Coconut Soft Serve, topped with a Pineapple Upside-down Cake Pop! The flavors blended together beautifully and was very refreshing on a hot Florida afternoon! It’s available for $6.99.

Click here to read our full review of the 50th Anniversary menu items at Aloha Isle!

Peanut Butter Cookie Pie from Main Street Confectionery

Main Street Confectionery in Magic Kingdom just went through a big transformation along with the addition of many new menu items! There’s a wide variety of sweets to choose from, with some hits and some misses! One of the big hits that we tried this month is the Peanut Butter Cookie Pie.

The Peanut Butter Cookie Pie!

This cookie is a Peanut Butter Cookie, Chocolate Frosting, and Peanut Butter M&M’s for $5.49. We thought it wasn’t overly sweet and had the perfect balance of peanut butter and chocolate!

Click here to read our full review of the Peanut Butter Cookie Pie!

50th Celebration Ice Cream Sandwich from Dino-Bite Snacks

Our final submission for the BEST things we tried this month in Disney World was found at Dino-Bite Snacks in Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Their 50th Anniversary Ice Cream Sandwich includes Vanilla Ice Cream sandwiched between two House-Made Double Chocolate Chip Cookies, dunked in glittery Celebration Sprinkles and topped with a 50th Anniversary Medallion. While the sandwich comes with vanilla ice cream, you can order it with chocolate or strawberry instead if you’d like!

50th Celebration Ice Cream Sandwich

Dino-Bite Snacks is where you’ll find seasonal ice cream sammies, including previous versions celebrating fall, St. Patrick’s Day, and Valentine’s Day. Like its predecessors, this 50th Anniversary treat was stellar! The double chocolate chip cookies won us over, making this our TOP pick for Animal Kingdom’s 50th Anniversary treat options. Give it a try on your next visit for $6.99.

The Worst

Squid’s Revenge Drink from Be Our Guest Restaurant

Be Our Guest Restaurant in Magic Kingdom debuted a series of menu items inspired by the now-extinct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction in celebration of Disney World’s 50th Anniversary. While we would have been more than happy to enjoy some crowd-pleasing seafood dishes, Disney understood the assignment a little too literally, providing us with the pleasure of ordering…octopus.

Squid’s Revenge…yeah this was a weird one

Now, maybe there are octopus fans out there who would enjoy Squid’s Revenge, which is a Michelada with a Salted Rim, garnished with Charred Octopus and Cucumber. This drink would definitely rank high if we were to list the most unique menu offerings in Disney World for the 50th Anniversary Celebration, but we couldn’t get over the cold and chewy texture of the octopus garnish. Even if you enjoy seafood (and we mean, like, REALLY enjoy seafood), we can’t recommend this drink. If you’re curious, it’ll cost you $13.

Click here to read our review of the 50th Anniversary menu items at Be Our Guest Restaurant!

Bear Tracks Slush from Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe

Another beverage that we wish we could wipe from our memory was the Bear Tracks Slush from Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and CafeThis is a Barq’s Root Beer and Vanilla Slush topped with Whipped Cream, Chocolate, and Peanut Butter Pieces. On paper, it sounds like those flavors should work well together and be pretty tasty, right?

NOT a fave

Wrong. We didn’t taste the root beer at all; in fact, all we were left with was a strong fruity aftertaste. Yeah…no one wants to taste fruit when you’re expecting root beer and vanilla. If you’re feeling brave and want to try it for yourself, you’ll find it at Pecos Bill for $5.99.

Click here to read our review of the 50th Anniversary treats at Pecos Bill!

Firefly Appletini from Restaurantosaurus Lounge

Disney really struggled with beverages this month! The Firefly Appletini from Restaurantosaurus Lounge ranked dead LAST on our list of the 50th Anniversary Celebration menu items that debuted in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This cocktail is a mixture of Stolichnaya Vodka, DeKuyper Pucker Sour Apple Liqueur, Sweet-and-Sour, Lime Juice, a Sugar Rim, and it’s served with a Glow Cube.

Firefly Appletini

It somehow managed the impossible in being both too sweet AND too sour at the same time. If they made a nonalcoholic version of this, then it might actually be a hit with the kids, because it tasted exactly like we were drinking a green apple Jolly Rancher. Unfortunately, because it has alcohol, no one can enjoy it. It costs $16 and given its small serving size, we felt more than a little ripped off.

Click here to read our ranking of ALL of the 50th Anniversary treats from Animal Kingdom

Fifi, Gigi, Mimi from Aloha Isle

We’re wrapping up our “Worst” list from October back at Aloha Isle, which is home to one of our TOP picks from this month, the Tropical Serenade! Unfortunately, the Fifi, Gigi, Mimi treat was almost a polar opposite experience for us.

Fifi, Mimi, and Gigi Treat

This treat is a trio of Pineapple, Vanilla, and Orange bundt cakes stacked on top of each other and filled with DOLE Whip Pineapple. Sounds tasty, right? Well, unfortunately, we found this snack to be pretty flavorless with a sad, sad portion of DOLE Whip on the inside. At $11.99, we find that it didn’t justify the cost at all.

Click here to read our ranking of ALL of the 50th Anniversary treats from Magic Kingdom

October was filled to the brim with new menu items — it was hard to narrow the list down this month! Don’t worry; the next couple of months are sure to be filled with even MORE food and drink items to try, with the holiday season starting in November as well as the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays. Be sure to follow along if you have a trip coming up so you know which items to prioritize (and which ones to skip!).

PHOTOS & VIDEOS: Check Out the INCREDIBLE Fireworks View From Disney World’s Newest Hotel!

What’s that tall, modern building off in the distance? It’s the Swan Reserve hotel! The new hotel is located next to the Swan and Dolphin Resort near EPCOT, and we can’t WAIT for the grand opening.

The Walt Disney World Swan Reserve

During our visit to the Swan and Dolphin hotel for the Food & Wine Classic event, we got to check out the Swan Reserve hotel. While we were visiting the new hotel, we had a STUNNING view we HAD to share! Is this a new favorite firework viewing location? You decide!

This was our view from (creatively named) The Vue! This rooftop venue gives you an ultra-wide look at Disney World from above, complete with FIREWORKS!

Ooooohhh

While there are plenty of places to see the fireworks in Magic Kingdom, there aren’t as many clear views of the EPCOT Harmonious fireworks.

Ahhhhhhhh

Not only that, but you can see Spaceship Earth all lit up for its beacon look, too!

STUNNING!

While a picture is worth a thousand words, we figured we’d fill in some of the gaps with some videos!

Seriously, you can see SO much from the top of The Swan Reserve!

It’s fun to see the fireworks from a new angle, and The Vue’s view (haha) did NOT disappoint!

Now, enjoy the grand finale!

We don’t know about you, but we’re OBSESSED with this new way to watch the EPCOT fireworks! The Swan Reserve is set to open soon, so stay tuned for more updates.

We Asked YOU About Genie+ in Disney World — Here’s What You Told Us!

Well, it’s official — Disney Genie has launched at Disney World, and we have spent lots of time trying to figure out everything we could about it!

Disney Genie has launched!

And we’ve covered everything we could think of, from how smart we think Disney Genie is to how many rides we can do in a day with Genie+ to the 120-minute rule. But we also asked YOU, our DFB readers, what you think about Genie and what it can do on Instagram.

Here’s what you said!

Which Disney Genie Feature Are You Most Likely To Use?

When we asked you about the Disney Genie feature you might want to actually use, we were surprised that the top answer was Disney Genie+  and pay-per-ride — over 3,500 of you agreed.

But it was also surprising how close it was between Disney Genie+ (2,734 votes) and Neither (2,841 votes), which kind of goes along with an earlier poll that revealed that about half of our readers wouldn’t pay for the additional features. Coming in last was the Premium Pay-Per-Ride Lightning Lanes feature only.

Tower of Terror Lightning Lane

We’ve covered both as extensively as we can, but if you’re still confused, be sure to read our posts about Genie+ and Individual Attraction Selection!

Get our FREE Genie printable HERE!

Which Park Will You Most Likely Use Disney Genie+

When it comes to the park where you’re most likely to use Disney Genie+, over 5,500 of our readers voted for Magic Kingdom first — and we get that — Magic Kingdom has SO many rides, so Genie+ might have a lot more value there. Disney’s Hollywood Studios came in second with over 3,800 votes.

it’s a small world entrance

This is almost in line with what we think, too! We definitely felt like we pushed Genie+ to the max at Magic Kingdom with the number of rides we managed to get on! Both EPCOT and Disney’s Animal Kingdom came in last from your answers.

How Many Rides Can We Do in a Day With Genie+ and Pay-Per-Ride in Disney World? Find Out Here!

Which Park Would You Least Likely Use Disney Genie+?

Likewise, the park where you would least likely use Disney Genie+ is Disney’s Animal Kingdom (with 4,786 votes), followed by EPCOT with 3,803 votes). Recently, ride lines haven’t really been that long at Animal Kingdom WITHOUT Genie+, and we’ve, more or less, seen the same at EPCOT.
