Disney+ Subscribers Should Check Their Email RIGHT NOW (And Read the Fine Print)

Over the past year, we’ve seen a lot of changes happening with Disney+.

In an effort to make streaming more profitable, Disney has not only raised the price of the streaming subscription service, but it’s also started to integrate Hulu, one of Disney’s OTHER streaming services, into the app. Disney also recently began to crack down on account sharing, and now the Disney+ subscriber agreement reflects that update.

Disney+ subscribers, you might want to check your email for an email titled, “We’re updating our Subscriber Agreement.” The email is easy to miss since, let’s be honest, who takes the time to read every word in those subscriber agreements? But you’re going to want to hear what Disney has to say this time.

Disney’s subscriber agreement was recently updated and now has a new section labeled “Account Sharing” that states: “Unless otherwise permitted by your service tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household. ‘Household’ means the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals that reside therein.”

You may notice that it also says that “Additional usage rules may apply for certain Service Tiers.” During The Walt Disney Company’s recent Q1 2024 earnings call, Disney revealed that it is working on a paid option for subscribers to add on to their accounts that will allow account sharing outside the household. So, if you want to share your account with someone else (who doesn’t live with you), you’ll need to pay extra for it. This new subscriber agreement also applies to ESPN+.

These terms apply NOW for new subscribers. For prior and existing subscribers, these terms will go into effect on March 14th, unless users acknowledge an in-app notice of these changes before March 14th.

Disney also added some new rules for those using a Disney+ gift card and added new information regarding billing timing. Note that Disney’s email may have ended up in your Junk/Spam folder, so make sure to check it out so you’re aware of all the changes.
