There’s Some GREAT Food at the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival…This Isn’t It. 😬

How much food is too much food?

2023 Kenya Booth

Wait, don’t answer that because we probably wouldn’t like the answer. The 2023 EPCOT Food & Wine Festival has officially kicked off, and we’re spending our day checking out all the festival merchandise, entertainment, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the food. So join us as we indulge in even MORE food at the Kenya food booth.

Menu

You’ll find traditional Kenyan dishes at this booth, and everything you’ll find here is returning from previous years.

Now that we’ve taken a look at the menu, let’s dive into the food itself!

Eats

As we previously mentioned, both food dishes are returning this year.

The Kenyan Coffee Barbecued Beef Tenderloin with Sweet Potato-Corn Mealie Pap and Kachumbari Slaw for $6.50 is gluten and wheat allergy-friendly. In the past, we loved the presentation of this item, and we found the flavors interesting. This year, the beef was seasoned quite a bit, but we didn’t get a lot of the coffee flavor. In fact, we found it a bit sweet, which we didn’t expect. The meat was also inconsistent: parts were tender, while other parts were a bit dry.

We liked that sweet glaze on top and think this dish could’ve benefitted from more of it. It reminded us of a fruity balsamic glaze. The corn-mealie pap was very similar to grits or polenta. The veggies on top were nice and crunchy — we’d say they added a bright vinegary taste. This was a good, adventurous dish, but it didn’t blow us away.

Something to note: parts of the meat were VERY pink, so if you like your meat cooked well-done, be warned.

The Peri-Peri Skewered Shrimp with Citrus-Flavored Couscous for $7 is also returning this year. Last year, we thought this was an exciting dish, but it’s definitely for more adventurous eaters because of the floral flavors. This year, we thought it was…well… just okay. We liked the sauce, which was tangy with a bit of a kick. But these shrimp were like teeny tiny baby shrimp. They were SO SMALL.

The citrus was a nice touch, but because the couscous was WAY too dry for us. The beans and veggies were also salty. Again, this is an interesting dish, but we felt underwhelmed.

So what about the drinks?

Drinks

Only one drink is available at this booth: the 81Bay Brewing Co. Congo Pilsner, Tampa, FL and it’s $5.50 for a 6-oz. pour and $9.50 for a 12 oz. pour.

OVERALL

All we can really say about this booth is that it’s okay. It has some appeal for adventurous eaters, but we don’t think these dishes did ENOUGH to make us say “wow.” Instead, we’re kinda’ just saying “meh” and calling it a day. This could be one of those “one and done” booths, which makes us sad because it has so much potential and we liked it well enough in previous years. Now, though, we don’t think it’s even close to a “must.”
