Unfortunately, lots of beloved TV shows get canceled before they really get a chance to shine.

Sometimes, if they’re lucky, they get at least a few seasons to show what they can do, but other times, they will be canceled before they even get a chance to see the light of day. That was almost the fate of this show, but another network swooped in to save it!

According to the New York Times, The Spiderwick Chronicles had completed production when Aron Eli Coleite, the writer, producer, and showrunner of the show that Paramount was producing for Disney+, received a phone call and was told that the whole series had been scrapped.

This meant that the entire 8 episode show that over 300 creators had worked on to bring to life would never see the light of day. Not only that, but they had already started working on a second season, which was quickly not going to happen. However, an unlikely savior came to the rescue.

The Roku Channel decided to save the completed series and debut all 8 episodes on its platform at once, and so far, the purchase has been a success. Roku announced that the show “had the best first weekend of any on-demand title on the Roku Channel, in terms of total hours streamed.”

This is fantastic news for a show that was nearly wiped off the face of the earth. Brian Tannenbaum, the head of originals at the Roku Channel, shared that The Spiderwick Chronicles was a perfect fit for the streaming service because of its “combination of real-world drama and fantasy magic.”

This series started at Apple TV+ over 5 years ago, then moved over to Disney+, and now has finally found its home at Roku. We can’t wait to see the future of this series and will keep you updated on it, so stay tuned to DFB!
