We have several BIG Disney movies to look forward to soon!

Inside Out 2 is set to open this summer on June 14th, and we’ve also got Mufasa: The Lion King releasing on December 20th (just in time for Christmas!). However, we’re really excited that there are TWO Moana movies in the works, including Moana 2, which releases on November 27th, and a live-action Moana. Now, we’ve got a huge update on BOTH films.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently shared an update on his social media account that he was in the studio recording his lines for Maui for Moana 2. He writes, “So much fun becoming MAUI again – a character that changed my life in many ways — including the character of MAUI being inspired by my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia.”

The photos he shared of the recording session sure make it look like he’s having a lot of fun. He wrote, “The Polynesian cultural significance of the role and our story has touched families around the world and has easily become one of my truest honors to bring to life and share.” He also promised “new characters, new journeys, new music.” We also previously learned that Auliʻi Cravalho, Moana’s original voice actress, will be returning for the sequel!

But that’s not all. In the comments of his Instagram post, we also got an update about the live-action Moana movie. Johnson is one of the producers of the film, while Cravalho will be serving as an executive producer. Johnson revealed that the live-action Moana will begin shooting this summer!

Although Johnson will be portraying Maui in the live-action movie, Cravalho recently explained why she won’t be reprising her role in the live-action film, instead leaving the role open for another actress of Pacific Island descent. The live-action Moana movie is expected to release in 2026.
