Universal Files NEW Patent That Could Change Your ENTIRE Theme Park Experience

One reason we love to look at newly filed patents is it gives us a sneak peek into what the theme park of the future might look like.

From new ride systems and ride mechanics to edible robots (yes, REALLY) to robots that could carry your stuff for you, the future technology of theme parks seems SO promising AND cool! Now, Universal has patented a new idea that could potentially change the way you navigate a theme park — all by wearing a wristband.

According to The Orlando Business Journal, Universal has filed a patent application for wearable tech called an “Interactive Way-Finder.” This is an interactive map that can basically be worn on the wrist. It has a screen that will have a hand pointing in the direction of a chosen destination in a theme park. If you need a restroom, it will point you there. If you’re looking for a ride, it will point you there. It would also include tech that could make suggestions on where to go based on where you are currently located or what you’re interested in.

The device could also give you details and directions specifically around certain attractions, shows, rides, exhibits, etc. It could even help you find the ride with the shortest wait time or provide you with ride safety instructions. It would even be capable of helping you find where to eat in the parks based on the food you like. There’s even an “Emergency Mode” that can direct you to safety. It could even help instantly find children who have been separated from their families or groups.

So how exactly would it work? Well, the wristband tech uses emitters (devices that emit light or sound) that have been placed throughout the property. It responds to those emitters to give you the information you need. So basically, it sounds sort of like some of the features in Disney’s park apps (like My Disney Experience), but easier to use, wearable, and with a few more features. Or maybe it’s more like a MagicBand+ on steroids.

Of course, patents are filed ALL the time by companies when good ideas come up. Those concepts aren’t always used, but it’s still a peek into what Universal is thinking about when it comes to the future of its theme parks. We’re sure there are a LOT of big ideas concerning Epic Universe, which will open in 2025. We’ll be keeping an eye out for more of these ideas and share them with you when we find them.
