PHOTOS: Walt Disney World Testing New X-Ray Machines at Security

On Thursday morning, we spotted Walt Disney World testing new X-ray machines with Cast Members at an EPCOT security station.

Testing was taking place at the lefthand security gate when approaching EPCOT.

Disney is not yet testing the X-ray machines with guests. The X-ray machines are for bags and other items, and are used in combination with the contactless scanners that guests walk through, which were tested and installed throughout 2020.

The contactless scanners replaced metal detectors and X-ray machines, allowing guests to walk through a single machine without removing or setting down their bags. The scanners flag guests for further screening and they step aside to have their bags searched and/or to have a metal detector wand waved over them.

It seems Disney decided this system wasn’t working quite right. We observed Cast Members placing bags in the X-ray machines and then walking through the scanners. A similar system is in place at Universal Orlando Resort.
