Confessions from a Flight Attendant: This is the WORST Airline Behavior

We’ve all been there.

What do you think is proper plane etiquette?

We’re no strangers to traveling by plane, but we got the insight from the experts — flight attendants — on the worst things you can do on an airplane!

Flying can be stressful; sometimes, humans add to that stress. But, we can all work together to try and make things just a bit easier on each other…

Have you flown lately?

…and we can do that by NEVER doing these things on a plane.

Play Media Out Loud

One of the most important rules of flying is to just be respectful of others — and that also applies to playing media out loud. Whether it’s music or podcast, a movie or the latest show, or even a game, the best thing you can do is to use headphones or earbuds. The people around you are most likely just trying to relax and do their own thing, and hearing someone else’s phone blasting the latest Harry Styles song probably doesn’t help (though, tbh, we probably wouldn’t mind that…)!

Enjoy your music or movie to your heart’s content…just with your headphones in please!

This is also true for most kids with tablets or other similar devices — no one (and we mean no one) wants to hear Cocomelon playing incessantly before or during a flight. If your kiddo is old enough to use a tablet, they’re old enough for headphones in most cases.

Argue with Airline Staff

Quite possibly, the most important thing to remember when you’re on a flight is to listen to flight attendants and the pilots. They’re trained in various situations and know how to help keep you safe. This also applies to the airline staff at the airport as well!

Mickey and Minnie

So, please, whatever you do when you’re flying — do your best NOT argue with flight attendants or airline staff. Airlines are private businesses, meaning they can keep you from flying for pretty much any reason they want. You wouldn’t want to miss your chance to meet Mickey and Minnie in Disney World, would you?!

It’s also important to pay attention to the safety briefing and not interrupt or be a distraction to others. You may have heard it a thousand times, but that doesn’t mean the people around don’t need to hear it. And by all means, don’t tell your flight attendant to smile during the safety briefing. The levels of wrong with this behavior are too numerous to count!

21 Things a Former Flight Attendant Needs You To Know

Talking on Speaker Phone

We get it. There are last-minute details that you may have to sort through, unplanned emergencies that may have popped up, and countless other reasons why you might need to be on your phone to address urgent situations (or even just to tell your kids or spouse goodbye one last time). But keep personal conversations — personal.

Airplane

Use your earbuds, headphones, or that old fashioned method of actually putting the phone to your ear to finish these conversations when you’re on the plane. Your conversation might be super important to you, but no one else on the plane really wants to hear it. It’s disruptive, distracting, and pretty inconsiderate when you’re sharing such a small and confined space with so many people.

Air Travel Tips That Will Change Your Life

Put Your Bare Feet on the Armrest in Front of You

Well, here we are, folks. We’ve reached the point of no return. Never did we think we’d actually need to say this particular piece of advice out loud, but…PLEASE, no matter what — do NOT but your bare feet on the armrest in front of you. Honestly, if you can help it, maybe don’t take your shoes of at all? Just a thought.

Maybe we should be sticking dryer sheets in OUR shoes??

And WHATEVER you do, please don’t go to the bathroom barefoot on an airplane, ever. People don’t have great aim (whether accidentally or on purpose), and the chances that you’re stepping in dried or wet urine are probably pretty high. It’s straight-up gross.

Going to the Bathroom Barefoot

Yep, we have two barefoot warnings in a row. We’re not sure how society got to this place, but we’ll have that hard conversation with you about wearing proper attire.

Again, there could be several reasons why people are tempted to (or perhaps medically need to) take their shoes off on a flight. But please do so with courtesy to those around you. Make sure your feet, socks, and shoes are clean and odor-free (there are plenty of sprays and powders out there to help with this!). And this is actually more for YOUR benefit than ours. Please don’t use the public airplane restrooms barefoot. There are so many germs in those rooms and we really don’t even want to think about what the person in that bathroom before you did. Bring slider sandals or something to slide on before using those teeny, tiny, germy bathrooms!

Inconsiderate Overhead Bin Usage

There are some unspoken rules about Overhead Bin courtesy. It’s a community space for everyone to share.

  • Use the bin near or over your seat.
  • Overhead bins are for larger bags or items, while smaller times (backpacks, purses, etc) should be stored under the seat in front of you
  • Don’t force a bag that’s too big.
  • Allow other passengers to store their larger bags before using leftover bin space for smaller items (like purses or jackets)
  • Don’t abuse bin access — have what you plan to use during your flight with you at your seat so you don’t have to disrupt others to get into your bag.
  • Wait your turn to unload — unless you have a razor-thin connection to make, wait until the rows in front of you clear out before lunging for your bag and the aisle.

Hope your next flight is stinky feet free!

At the end of the day, though, the most important thing to remember when you’re on a plane or traveling is to just be respectful and mindful of everyone else around you! Everyone is just trying to get to where they’re going, and that can happen a lot faster if there aren’t kerfuffles on the plane. Just sit back, try to relax, and remember that you’re not the only one on that plane!
