Repainting continues at Magic Kingdom to bring the Tomorrowland boulders back to their former glory, but there is still much work to be done.

Tomorrowland Boulders Being Repainted

On a recent trip to Magic Kingdom, we finally noticed some substantial progress on the repainting of the Tomorrowland boulders since our last update.

The three main spires off to the left of the entrance, when coming from the Castle Hub, are now fully painted in the dark, metallic blue color.

However, you can still see some of the rocks further back still in need of their refresh.

The grey underpaint really sticks out against the galactic blue and purple hues of the repaint.

You can really see in this image just how much more work is left to go. All of the boulders to the left of the bridge will have to be repainted to match the larger spires toward the main walkway.

On the opposite side of the bridge, repainting progress appears to be slightly further along, with about half of the boulders on this side painted in the same metallic blue.

This is not a refresh that happens often for Tomorrowland. The last time these rocks were refreshed with a new paint job was 2016. Issues with peeling and fading of the paint, showing the former red and orange hues of the rocks underneath, began very soon after the repainting that same year.

Are you excited to see the Tomorrowland boulders once their refresh is finally complete? Did you prefer the original, orange look to the rocks, or would you rather remove the rocks from the land’s entrance altogether? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Tomorrowland Reimagining

In advance of TRON Lightcycle / Run opening earlier this year, much of Tomorrowland was updated. You can see photos and video of TRON here and see our review here. For more, check out a full guide to TRON Lightcycle / Run here.

The Space Mountain gift shop, Tomorrowland Light & Power Co., has been officially renamed to Tomorrowland Launch Depot. It serves as the “exit” gift shop for TRON and features mostly TRON-related wares, including the custom Identity Program action figures. It was gutted and redone inside.

The 1994 Tomorrowland gears and electrical tower mural were removed. The clock was repainted, and the decorative gears were removed. It sports a new color scheme with deep navy and gold — reminiscent of the Walt Disney World 50th anniversary color scheme. The ride was originally set to debut for the 50th anniversary in October 2021, but due to delays primarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was unable to be completed on time.

Space Mountain was cleaned and repainted, and new starry flooring was installed in most of the queue.

A new pathway that connects Tomorrowland and Storybook Circus in Magic Kingdom was constructed after the former path was demolished to make way for TRON Lightcycle / Run. The gear pavement by the main Tomorrowland entrance was removed.

The 1994 retrofuturistic PeopleMover sign was removed, and the attraction received a new narration.

The finale scene of Carousel of Progress was updated as well.
