Netflix Predicted to Beat Disney+ Revenue by 100% in 2027

Do people even have cable TV subscriptions anymore? We’re sure some people do, but all anyone talks about these days is streaming.

Streaming is certainly here to stay, and almost all of us have subscriptions to services like Netflix and Disney+ (of course, we have Disney+, we are DISNEY Food Blog). But which streaming service will be the one to stay on TOP? Well, we now have an answer for that — at least for the next five years.

Just a few years ago, Netflix was beating Disney+, at least when it came to the numbers. However, Digital TV Research once forecasted that Disney+ would have more subscribers than Netflix by the year 2025. However, when it comes to revenue, it looks like Netflix may still be the streaming service to come out on top.

Digital TV Research just released its forecast through 2027, and it predicts that Netflix will remain the world leader in streaming. It predicts that Netflix will have 251 million subscribers in 2027, with Disney+ only having 207 million.

So why the change? Well, the original forecast was considering Disney+ Hotstar retaining India Premier League cricket rights. However, Disney+ did not retain those rights, so  now it’s forecasted to have fewer subscribers in the future. So losing the right to the cricket matches will end up hurting Disney+ subscriptions on an international level.

Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said, “SVOD [Subscription Video On Demand] revenues for Disney+ will reach $15 billion by 2027.” However, Netflix is expected to have $30 billion in revenue by 2027. So Netflix will remain the top streaming service, at least when it comes to revenue.

After Bob Iger returned as CEO of the Walt Disney Company, he called streaming his #1 priority with plans to make it more profitable. On May 10th, 2023, Disney shared its quarterly earnings report for the second quarter of fiscal year 2023. The report revealed that the total number of Disney+ subscribers is now 157.8 million.

Disney also previously said it would cut $3 billion in non-sports content. As a result, some shows and movies have been removed from Disney+ and Hulu to cut costs.

We’ll continue to report on ALL things Disney, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
