First ‘Skeleton Crew’ Footage Debuted at Star Wars Celebration

The first “Skeleton Crew” footage debuted at Star Wars Celebration in London this morning. The upcoming “Star Wars” series stars Jude Law and a group of kids, who Law introduced during the Lucasfilm panel.

The young actors of “Skeleton Crew” are Ravi Cabot-Conyers (Antonio in “Encanto”), Kyriana Kratter (“Bunk’d”), and Robert Timothy Smith (“Mythic Quest”). Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) is also part of the cast.

The clips shown at Star Wars Celebration included the children in school, riding speeders, and Law as a Jedi. A voice-over said, “Don’t you ever wanna do anything exciting?”

“Skeleton Crew” is set in the New Republic era, around the same time as “The Mandalorian,” and reportedly has some connection to the original live-action “Star Wars” series. It’s said to be an Amblin-like coming-of-age adventure about kids, but not just for kids. It centers on a group of kids lost in the galaxy, trying to find their way home, but little else is known about the plot.

“I was six years old when this galaxy, this world gripped me, blew my mind,” Law said at the panel. “And I feel like I’ve been in preparation ever since. It was a total pleasure; I think one of the highlights was working with the incredible, talented people working behind the scenes. It was a true dream come true.”

“Skeleton Crew” is created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford of Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Filming wrapped last September, when the first image of Jude Law in the series was released, showing four characters behind Law, potentially the three kids and Condon’s character. During production, it was called “Grammar Rodeo,” a reference to an episode of “The Simpsons” when Bart Simpson and some of his classmates rent a car using a fake ID and go on a road trip.

Watts, Ford, Jon Favreau, and Dave Filoni all executive produce. Watts, Bryce Dallas Howard (“The Mandalorian”), Jake Schreier (“Beef,” Marvel’s “Thunderbolts”), David Lowery (“The Green Knight”), and “Everything Everywhere All At Once” team Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert all direct episodes.

An exact release date or timeframe has not been announced, but it’s scheduled to premiere on Disney+ this year. It could be the next show to debut after “Ahsoka,” which begins in August.

Lucasfilm also announced three new standalone “Star Wars” films and the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. They released the first teaser trailer for “Ahsoka,” starring Rosario Dawson as the titular Ahsoka Tano, who first appeared in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and then made her live-action debut in “The Mandalorian.” They also released “The Acolyte” footage exclusively at Star Wars Celebration. “The Acolyte” stars Amandla Stenberg as the titular acolyte and Lee Jung-jae as a Jedi master. Footage from “Rogue One” prequel “Andor” season 2, starring Gabriel Luna, also premiered.
