Okay, so who’s excited about the opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run in Disney World?

Magic Kingdom’s newest ride could be one of its most thrilling, with a super fast launch, a race through the Grid, and fun TRON details that make you feel immersed in the world of the Tron movies! Well, we just got a chance to ride it and we’re going to tell you EVERYTHING about the ride and, hopefully, answer any questions you may have!

Quick note: we got to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run early thanks to Cast Member previews (we were invited as guests by a Disney World Cast Member).

The Story of TRON Lightcycle / Run

Okay, we’re going to get you caught up on the story of the TRON ride, but you will need a little knowledge of the TRON movies (don’t worry — they’re on Disney+ if you want to understand more about the setting of the ride). Sam Flynn, who is the main character in TRON: Legacy, has been opening up new gateways into the digital realm all over the world. The first is in Shanghai Disneyland where the original TRON Lightcycle Power Run ride is located.

The second portal is in Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom, where guests can get on a Lightcycle to “launch into the Grid for a race through a dark computerized world.”

How fast are those Lightcycles? Well, they go up to 59 miles per hour (which still isn’t fast enough to catch up to Disney World’s FASTEST ride, Test Track).

How To Ride

There are only two ways to score a ride on TRON Lightcycle / Run when it opens. First, you can get a boarding pass on the My Disney Experience app to get access to the ride’s virtual queue. Disney has not announced times for when those boarding passes will be available, but if past rides are any indication, it will be 7AM and 1PM. Note that this is the way to ride for free.

You will also be able to grab an Individual Lighting Lane for the ride, which means you can pay to ride it. Spots for that will open up every morning at 7AM. There will NOT be a standby line for the attraction.

Entrance

As we mentioned, you’ll find TRON Lightcycle / Run in Tomorrowland. You’ll find it right next to Space Mountain and behind Tomorrowland Speedway. Just look for the ride’s sign.

If you’re wanting to snag a photo, there’s a PhotoPass opportunity right at the entrance.

If you need a restroom break before you hop in line, there are restrooms to the left of the ride’s entrance.

We also saw the sign that will ultimately tell you the wait time for the standby queue and the times for the Lightning Lane.

Note that guests must be at least 48″ tall to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run.

When you’re ready, it’s time to join the queue.

Test Seat

There’s a test seat just before queue so you can see if you are comfortable with the standard ride vehicle.

There is an adaptive seat option on the ride for those who are not able or do not want to use the regular ride seats. To request the adaptive seats, speak with a Cast Member who will take them you to the side before boarding and have you wait for a train with the adaptive seating (where you just sit up with a lap bar like a regular roller coaster).

Note that not every train has adaptive seating, so you may have to wait a bit.

Queue

Most of the queue is outside, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on riding this in the summer.

There are fans overhead that will probably come in REALLY handy once the weather gets hot and humid.

You’ll be able to see the Lightcycles speeding above you in parts of the queue, too.

Once you get closer to the loading area, you’ll go into the “Team Blue Users” tunnel (everyone is Team Blue, by the way, because you’re racing Team Orange, which is controlled by the computer).

Inside, you’ll be transported into the Grid.

Voila! You’ve been digitized and you’re now just code in a digital world.

A video will give you the basic safety spiel and explain how everything works.

This is where things get interesting.

Lockers

TRON Lightcycle / Run is the first Disney World ride that requires the use of lockers. Before you get to the ride’s loading area, you’ll be directed to lockers where you’ll have to store your larger items. To open a locker, scan your MagicBand or ticket (or ask a Cast Member for a locker card if you don’t have either of those). Be sure to note your locker number. 

Also, if you accidentally lock your MagicBand or park ticket inside (like we did — oops!), a Cast Member can help you get back into it.

Store your stuff in the locker — there is a small compartment on each Lightcycle where you can put smaller items, like your phone or sunglasses, but don’t forget to grab those things after your ride! Once you’re done with the ride, you’ll be directed back to the lockers — you’ll use your MagicBand, park ticket, or locker card to open it and retrieve your items.

If you happen to forget your locker number, there’s also a place where you can scan your MagicBand, park ticket, or locker card to bring up your locker number.

Seriously, Disney has thought of everything!

Loading Area

The loading area is where you’ll be briefed on all the safety instructions for the ride.

Cast Members will direct you to your Lightcycle.

This is also when you can store your smaller items on the Lightcycle.

If you’re using the Adaptive Seating, you’ll be directed to that loading gate.

Here’s a closer look at what that seating looks like:

If you’re using the standard seating, you’ll have to straddle the Lightcycle, and you will have to kick your leg up kinda’ high to get on it. Once you’re in place, you pull on the handlebars to lock the back in place. Although this may seem similar to the seating on Flight of Passage in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, it’s actually pretty different. You feel more like you’re being thrust forward on the Lightcycle, so this could be uncomfortable for some guests.

Note that a little metal bar also comes down behind your legs, so that could be a deal-breaker for some, too.

Basically, this is not the most comfortable ride in Disney World, but if you can sit like that for a short time, you should be fine. But some guests will find it too uncomfortable — if you have doubts, be sure to try the test seat first.

The Ride

The ride starts with an epic launch system and that’s probably the most thrilling part of the ride. It’s smooth like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, but it feels more like an updated version of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. The effects are also SO cool.

The ride itself lasts a little over a minute — we’d compare the length of the ride to that of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
