REVIEW: Would You Eat a WHOLE FRIED FISH at a Disney Festival?

The Lunar New Year celebrations have begun in Disneyland Resort!

Lunar New Year Festival

We’ve already checked out some great Lunar New Year merchandise, shared a peek at the entertainment you’ll be able to enjoy during the festivities, and taken a look at the FULL menus for the Lunar New Year snack spots. Now, we’re making our way to one restaurant in Disney California Adventure that’s offering some festival-inspired eats and drinks!

Menu

Paradise Garden Grill is a Counter Service location located in Disney California Adventure park. Though it is not a festival “booth” so to speak, it is serving up some festival-inspired treats, as it tends to do! For example, you can get a wide range of entrées, plant-based offerings

This year, Paradise Garden Grill has some returning food options as well as a few new eats and drinks! Let’s check them out!

Food

First up, at Paradise Garden Grill you’ll find the returning Korean-style BBQ Chicken. This dish is made of a half chicken with steamed white rice, kimchi, pickled cucumbers, and sesame seeds. What’s good to know about this particular item is that it comes in both a regularly sized version as well as a Sip and Savor portion size (which is more of a sampling size). The Sip and Savor Pass is a souvenir credential that guests can buy for a set amount. Each Pass comes with a certain number of pull-off tabs that you can then use for qualifying items at the festival!

The Korean-Style BBQ Chicken!

This was a delicious, moist chicken but it didn’t really stand out that much. It was basically your average barbecue with some Korean-inspired flavors, but nothing to write home about!

Yum!

You can grab this item for $15.99.

Next, we have the returning Pork Banh Mi. This dish features grilled pork belly with pickled daikon, carrots, cucumber, jalapeño, cilantro, and seasoned mayonnaise on a crispy baguette. This is another one where there is a regular portion size as well as a Sip and Savor portion size available.

Bahn Mi

This sandwich was VERY refreshing! The fresh baguette and the crisp veggies gave this a wonderful texture that went perfectly with the savory pork. The seasoned mayo also gave this sandwich that little extra touch to push it from good to great!

This is a CLASSIC Vietnamese sandwich!

You can buy this item for $13.99.

Up next is a NEW item — the Spicy Kung Pao Tofu. This dish is made with deep fried tofu with zucchini, yellow squash, broccoli, red peppers, peanuts, and fried rice garnished with garlic deep-fried chips. Again, a Sip and Savor portion is available.

Kung Pao Tofu

Everything about this dish is great but be sure to eat it quickly — it gets cold fast! Regardless of temperature, this was delicious: the tofu and rice both had lots of flavor, the veggies were crisp and fresh, and the garlic chips on top were a fun addition.

Yum!

You can try this dish for $14.49.

Looking for a BIG dish to fill more than just 1 guest? Then maybe the Whole Fried Fish is your ideal meal. YES. You read that right — a WHOLE FRIED FISH! This returning item features a crispy whole fish, sweet and sour sauce, steamed rice, stir-fried vegetables and chicken soup. That’s quite the meal!

Yup, that’s a whole fish!

Sadly this one wasn’t as good it was in previous years. The fish? Delicious. The sides? Perfection. The sauce? Let’s talk about the sauce. Something was very off about the Sweet & Sour Sauce this year, it tasted like a frozen sauce they had microwaved and it just didn’t taste right. Definitely a downgrade from last year’s version.

Yum!

It’s served family-style and is meant to serve 2. You can try it out for $24.99.

Looking for something sweet? Paradise Garden Grill has you covered with the Green Tea Raspberry Parfait. This dessert is made of Green tea mousse, raspberry jelly, white sponge cake, white chocolate mousse, and candy pearls.

The Green Tea Raspberry Parfait!

The flavors are definitely strong on this one! It was a very smooth parfait and the green tea and raspberry complement each other well, with both flavors being similarly potent. We definitely enjoyed this one!

A great way to finish off the meal.

You can try it for $6.99.

Beverages

Need something to sip on as you devour all of your food from this spot? There are a few different choices to pick from here. First you could try the NEW non-alcoholic Tiger Milk Tea drink which comes with brown sugar boba. This drink had a great amount of sweetness and a nice balanced flavor that was a hint…maple-y?

How can you go wrong with boba?

There was a little bit of maple syrup vibe coming off of this milk tea and we loved it. This drink can be all yours for $5.49.

Another NEW drink is the Soju Cocktail. This drink is made of Soju, ginger beer, lemon, basil, Fresno chile, lychee flavor-filled boba. Sadly, we were a little bit disappointed in this one — we were expecting some spice to come through, but we got nothing! What we did get, however, was a weird artificial lemon taste in our mouths (which we did not enjoy at all!).

The Soju Cocktail has some flair!

Although we wouldn’t recommend this one, it could still be worth a try! Stop by Paradise Garden Grill and get this for $14.

Overall

Overall, Paradise Garden Grill is actually one of the spots with the most snack and drink options at the Lunar New Year festival. There are some solid returning options with fairly decent portion sizes, a new Tofu dish for those looking for a non-meat-based dish, and even some sweet drinks to help wash it all down. Although the whole fish and the soju didn’t really impress us, we’re still pretty happy with most of the dishes we tried at this spot. If you’re looking for a spot with a decent amount of variety in terms of the dishes — giving everyone in the family the chance to pick something that might fit their palette — this could be a good choice.

Our whole spread!

The Lunar New Year festivities will only be going on from January 21st through February 13th so be sure to stop by Disney California Adventure while you can to take in all the fun! We’ll keep an eye out for more Disney news and let you know what we find.
