Destination D23 2021 just wrapped up at the Walt Disney World Resort, and while plenty of big announcements were made (such as the return of Fantasmic with a new scene), plenty of recent additions were touted as well. However, one big recent addition was left out of any mention at the fan event—the Disney Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lane systems.

Although Disney recapped many developments from the past year and a half, as well as revealed plenty of returning and upcoming offerings, Disney Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lane, the paid replacement for the former FastPass, were not mentioned at all through the weekend.

This is rather curious, as the Walt Disney Company just two weeks ago praised the success of Disney Genie+ in their latest earnings call, with CEO Bob Chapek claiming that nearly 1/3 of Guests visiting Walt Disney World since launch have upgraded to Genie+. The reason behind the reportedly-successful system’s omission remains unknown, but it may be the same reason why Disney CEO Bob Chapek reportedly didn’t show up: fear of a negative reaction from the crowd in attendance.
