Here’s What Disney Artists Can Do With 40 TONS of Sand!

You guys, it’s almost March!!! And you know what that means? Disney’s newest animated movie Raya and the Last Dragon premieres NEXT WEEK!

Coming out next week!

And we’ve been pretty hyped about it after seeing the latest trailer and all the promotion for its debut on Disney+ and in theaters!

In honor of the big release, Disney recently announced that it would bring two NEW Raya and the Last Dragon experiences to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Ever since we’ve been looking out for them, and one appeared a few days ago in the form of 40 tons of sand on the Discovery Island Stage — THAT’S A LOT OF SAND! But exactly what does that have to do with the new movie?

That’s a LOT of sand!

Well, some VERY talented Disney artists are in the process of converting that massive lump of sand into a sculpture celebrating Raya’s release. And they were just getting started when we first checked a few days ago — this is what it looked like then.

Just lumps of sand at this point

But we checked this morning, and these lumps of sand are now taking on shape and becoming beautiful art! Look at Sisu peeking over the top of the pyramid with Raya at her side!

Wow!

Like how do they even get all those details made in sand? INCREDIBLE.

Can you believe that’s sand?

A few hours later, we decided to see what kind of progress they had made, and there were a TON of  new characters added, including Tuk Tuk!

WOW!

We’re blown away with the level of detail. When the sculpture is complete, they’ll put a special coating on it so that it doesn’t fall apart. We’re looking forward to tracking the progress of the sculpture from start to finish!

Look at those details

The other new Raya experience starts tomorrow — you’ll be able to draw characters from the movie at The Animation Experience at Conservation Station. We’ll also be seeing more Raya merchandise in the parks and online leading up to its big premiere! We’re so excited! We’ll be sure to share other Raya stuff we spot in the parks.
