PHOTOS – Take a Look at the Crowds at Walt Disney World Today (and Yesterday Too)

Each year Disney fans flock to Walt Disney World to say farewell to the current year and ring in the new. This year is very different with COVID-19 precautions, reduced capacity, and reservations required. Today, and yesterday, is proving to be a busy day in the parks. For the most part our team is noticing mask compliance and distancing is still going pretty strong.

Japan Pavilion afternoon of 12-30-2020

Yesterday at EPCOT our team observed 11 out of 500 guests were not wearing their masks in accordance with Disney’s guidelines. Today at Disney’s Hollywood Studios we observed 13 out of 500 not wearing their mask properly. This means about 98% of observed guests were in compliance.

Disney’s posted wait times have been some of the highest of the past 30 days, and yesterday three of the four parks had average wait times that were in the top 50 of the entire year!

We aim to make our Lines app as helpful as possible whether you visit during a super busy time, or a slower one. One of the useful features of our app is the Expected Wait Times. We collect Actual Wait Times and other data to help produce the real-time Expected Wait Times. We all know Disney’s Posted Wait Times are higher than the actual wait time, but our Expected Wait Times show a realistic picture so you can make better decisions in the parks.

Slinky Dog Dash Extended Queue morning of 12-31-2020
Smuggler’s Run Extended Queue morning of 12-31-2020

At EPCOT yesterday and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios today, our team observed plenty of extended queues. With physical distancing necessary, the queues extended out into walkways and other parts of the park. We’ve also noticed some rides being loaded with every row now in order to increase capacity of the rides. Park capacity is still capped at 35%, but ride capacity being increased means that even if you see longer lines, they should move faster than when the rides had decreased capacity.

Italy Pavilion afternoon of 12-30-2020
Mexico Pavilion afternoon of 12-30-2020
China Pavilion afternoon of 12-30-2020

One helpful aspect of the reservation system is guests who have chosen to visit today do not have to get to the park first thing in the morning before capacity is reached. Those with a park reservation essentially have secured their spot for the day.

Germany Pavilion afternoon of 12-30-2020

At EPCOT yesterday we saw a few tents for Festival of the Arts, which starts on January 8, 2021. There were also extended queues for quick service food since most counter service restaurants at EPCOT do not have mobile ordering.

Today at Hollywood Studios our team is noticing some extra crowds at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land. It certainly is an interesting time to be at Walt Disney World.

Florida has seen over one million total COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, and now, the state has reported the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases on record.

According to Orlando Sentinel, New Year’s Eve brought Florida’s report of 17,192 cases — more than have ever been reported before in a single day in the state. This brings the state’s total for positive COVID-19 cases up to 1,323,315.

Hollywood Studios Attractions

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run

Although the park didn’t feel that crowded to us, we still noticed some super long lines. In Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, three of the large doors that lead to the backstage area were open for the queue for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. The line went into Toy Story Land!

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run line

The wait time was only posted as 65 minutes, but we would guess that it was actually a lot longer, although maybe not since they’re now boarding separate groups together after adding plexiglass to the attraction.

See photos of the plexiglass dividers on Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run

Slinky Dog Dash

The line for Slinky Dog Dash went all the way back to Voyage of the Little Mermaid!

As a side note, we noticed that the gift shop windows had kicked out 2020 merch to make way for 2021 merch (and we totally get it — goodbye, 2020!). And we’re ready to say goodbye to Hollywood Studios until next year! We’ll see you there in 2021!

PICS: Christmas Decorations Are Coming Down in Disney World

It’s the last day of 2020 and the last day of Disney’s official Christmas season!

Hollywood Studios Christmas Decorations

There are lots of decorations still posted around Disney World, but we did notice some signs of the holiday season ending today in Disney World. Take a look at the spots where Christmas is disappearing!

This is a pic from Magic Kingdom earlier this season where you can see the Partners Statue surrounded by some seriously GORGEOUS red poinsettias.

Magic Kingdom

But TODAY, those poinsettias are gone to be replaced with pretty yellow buds. These blooms are a good choice to welcome in 2021, don’t you think?

Magic Kingdom

You’ll notice that garland is still up in the Emporium, but the big holiday merch display at the front of the store has been totally replaced with some 2021 merch!

Main Street Emporium

Similarly, the wall that USED to be filled with ornaments is now loaded up with the new Reigning Cats and Dogs collection. Pet lovers, get excited!

Main Street Emporium

Over in EPCOT, we noticed a very BIG piece of the holiday spirit was missing. The Christmas tree has been removed!

EPCOT Tree Gone

Now, as you can see from the pics in the Emporium, some Christmas is still very much present in Disney World! In fact, we spotted a bunch of decorations still up around the parks AND you can still get most of the yummy holiday treats!

Chocolate Chestnut Pinecone

Those probably won’t be here for long though so you better hurry to soak up the last drops of Christmas spirit! We’re reporting today and tomorrow with all the exciting New Year’s news in Disney World. Stay tuned!
