We keep a close eye on airlines to watch for great deals and discounts that are offered on flights and offer our flying tips often, and while gas prices have improved, they’re still high in many states. If driving for your next adventure is more cost-effective for your family than flying, how can you make the most of your trip and save money on gas? Be Familiar With Your Route

Be sure to look at your trip ahead of time and be familiar with the route you’re taking.

Now, you don’t need to know every twist and turn, but knowing the major roads you need to look out for can help you avoid getting lost or turned around, which wastes gas!

Slow Down!

Yes, we’re serious! According to AAA, fuel economy peaks at around 50 mph on most cars, then drops off as speeds increase.

Pay attention to those speed limit signs!

Reducing highway speeds by 5 to 10 mph can increase fuel economy by 7 to 14%! It may not sound like a lot, but it certainly adds up.

If you make one of these 8 catastrophic travel mistakes, don’t worry, you can fix it!

Avoid Rush Hour Traffic and Stop and Go Traffic

Rapid acceleration and hard braking can lower fuel economy by 15 to 30% at highway speeds and 10 to 40% in stop-and-go traffic. So if at all possible, travel at off-travel times and stick to open highways without frequent stop signs or traffic lights.

We also suggest using a fast pass on toll roads if you have it, as it can allow you to travel constantly while other lanes may be stopped.

Cruise Control!

Use cruise control if your car has it!

Using consistent speed on highways is better for your gas mileage. However, we don’t recommend using this feature on backroads or roads with lots of stop signs or traffic lights.

Save Money On Gas With Apps

Even if you do increase your gas mileage, you are going to have to get gas at some point. Save money on the gas you do have to get by using apps like Upside, Gas Guru, or Gas Buddy!

Gas Station

Through these apps, you can look ahead to see what gas prices are, and some will offer you cash back if you claim the offer before getting gas at the pump. A few cents back a gallon may not seem like a lot at first, but it adds up quick, and every little bit counts!

NEVER travel for full price with these tips!
