NEWS: Netflix To Start CHARGING for Password Sharing in Early 2023

We are living in the age of the streaming wars, and the jury is still out on who’s going to come out on top.

Both Disney+ and Netflix are introducing ad-supported plans to their platforms later this year. We recently learned when the ads will begin and just how much each plan will cost for Netflix, and now it looks like they’re throwing another charge into the mix.

Gone are the days of ad-free streaming on quite a few different platforms, and Netflix is the latest to announce the pricing for its new lineup of plans.

Ads are officially coming to Netflix on November 3rd, 2022, with the ad-supported tier priced at $6.99 per month. Netflix’s other plans include Basic (no ads — $9.99/month), Standard (no ads — $15.49/month), and Premium (no ads — $19.99/month).

But, those aren’t the only new charges you’ll have to worry about as Netflix will officially charge for password sharing beginning in early 2023, according to Time. Essentially, if you share your Netflix password and allow others to stream from different devices, you could be faced with an additional charge.

The company did share that it will “give users who are borrowing someone else’s account the ability to transfer their existing profile information—including viewing history and personalized recommendations—to their own account” and “Subscribers who want to keep sharing with family or friends outside of their household will also have the ability to pay for ‘sub-accounts’ for extra members.

Charges for password sharing have already been rolled out in Costa Rica, Chile, and Peru, though the company has still not shared just how much its planning to charge for the service in the U.S. just yet.

After reporting losing subscribers in early 2022 and later laying off hundreds of employees, Netflix recently added 2.4 million subscribers. Whether or not they’ll stick around after the ads roll out remains to be seen. As a reminder, the ad-supported tier of Disney+ will debut on December 8th, 2022.
