Why It May Be More Difficult To Go On A Cruise This Summer

The past three years have been difficult on the cruise industry.

The Disney Wish

In 2020, every major cruise line was forced to cancel sailings in response to the global pandemic. Cruising did not resume until 2021, although cruise ships had limited capacity at the time. Now, though, the industry seems to be bouncing back: more cruisers are expected in Port Canaveral this summer than in the past three years.

According to WESH, all six of the cruise ships based out of Port Canaveral will be sailing this weekend, and the cruise industry is seeing the biggest number of cruisers in three years.

Peter Bergeron, Port Canaveral’s senior manager of public safety and security said: “We need to control the people leaving and coming to make sure that they are all safe. You (multiply) that by six, so it’s probably 50 to 70,000 people. So think of filling and unfilling an NFL stadium.”

New technology is helping speed things up at the port, though, like facial recognition, allowing ships to be cleared in 30 minutes. However, cruising hasn’t entirely returned to normal. When boarding the Disney Wish recently, all guests ages 5 and up were required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Those guests must also provide a negative COVID-19 test result for a test that was taken no more than two days before setting sail or test negative on a COVID-19 test taken at the terminal.
