DETAILS on What Kinds of Ads Disney+ Will Run

Disney+ has made a huge splash in the streaming service world since it launched back in 2019.

We’ve seen a ton of original content, like The Mandalorian and WandaVision, as well as the release of blockbuster movies on the service, like Pixar’s Turning Red. A big thing that set Disney+ apart from some other streaming services was its lack of advertising. But, ads are coming to Disney+ later this year, and now, we know more about the types of ads subscribers can expect to see.

The new ad-supported tier of Disney+ will not accept alcohol or political advertising at its launch, according to Variety. Disney will also not take ads from rival outlets or entertainment studios.

Two media buyers with knowledge of recent discussions between the company and advertising agencies said Disney is being careful not to have ads that could overshadow the service’s family-friendly environment. They also said Disney will be cautious about running ads during shows aimed at pre-school audiences, and will not run any ads at all when an individual user profile indicates that a young child is watching, according to Variety.

Media buyers said that the level of control Disney is showing over the potential ads for the streaming service could create a sense of scarcity for its commercial inventory, which could also increase demand from marketers.

Ads on Disney+ will run an average of four minutes per hour or less, according to Variety. This makes the service more competitive, as this would be fewer ads per hour than Peacock has right now and be the about the same amount of ads as HBO Max. This is also significantly fewer ads than Disney’s sister streaming outlet Hulu, which has ran as many as 9 to 12 ads per hour. Note that the official amount of ads per hour coming to Disney+ has not yet been confirmed by the company.

The strict control of ads is not new for Disney. On the Disney Channel, there are no traditional ads, only sponsored messages that tie into the network’s programming. And, over on Disney Junior, there are typically no commercials at all.

And ad-supported tier on Disney+ “is going to give us the ability to reach an even more broad audience as we expand Disney+ across multiple price points,” said Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek during the Q2 earnings call last week.

If you don’t want ads on Disney+, don’t worry, there will still be an option to subscribe with no ads, it will just be at a higher price point than the ad-supported subscription level. Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news and updates.
