A large police presence was on hand in hope of keeping protests under control outside Donald Trump’s rally in Anaheim California Wednesday. The event concluded with the declaration of an “unlawful assembly,” on Katella Avenue between the Anaheim Convention Center and the Disneyland Resort.
Mounted officers moved in to break up a confrontation about 1:30 p.m. A Trump supporter had entered the fray with a bullhorn and was shouting at the protesters that their stance was why “we need to build the wall.” The man told the protesters to “go home,” saying Orange County did not need them there. In response, anti-Trump protesters called his supporters “racist.”
As the rally ended and Trump finished speaking just before 1:30 p.m., a large group gathered in the parking lot of Tiffy’s Family Restaurant on the corner of Katella and West Street and focused on one man carrying a large American flag. Just before 2 p.m., police ordered protesters to disperse, saying the gathering had been declared an “unlawful assembly.” Dozens of mounted officers appeared to be trying to clear the streets. A fight also took place outside the Centers Marquee construction site about 3 p.m.
Two people were arrested and more arrests were expected, Anaheim Police Department Sgt. Daron Wyatt said.
