10/14/16: from WDI Communications:

We’re sad to share that former Imagineer Skip Lange passed away Oct. 14.

Skip joined Imagineering in 1970 as a dimensional designer, and went on to be a field designer on several attractions at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park. During the creation of Epcot he was the production designer for two Future World pavilions, and he was the show producer for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Tokyo Disneyland. Later he would act as field art director for each of the five themed lands at Disneyland Paris, and he was the show director for Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland Park.

Retired Imagineer Chalmer Day shared some thoughts about his colleague:

“My fondest memories of working with Skip include when he was the overall field rockwork art director for Mysterious Island at Tokyo DisneySea. I also recall when we were working on Adventureland for Hong Kong Disneyland and he was given the last-minute direction to add an entire ‘wow’ scene to the jungle river ride. It was a huge challenge and he pulled it off beautifully. Skip was an amazing Imagineer and an even greater friend who did so much good in the world.”

Memorial arrangements for Skip are pending.

Skip was my boss and mentor at Imagineering when I worked there back in the day. What I know and how I manage people is patterned after how Skip did things and how he treated all of us that worked under him. Learning that he passed away sent a bolt of electricity through me today. I have thought about him often through the years and will continue to carry his memory into the future. Rock One rock on Skip!

Gary Goddard I was at WED starting in ’76 and Skip, in addition to being very talented, was a really good guy. He and Tony B were working on a massive model of BIG THUNDER as I remember — always friendly and always willing to pitch in. I agree with Ed Sotto’s comment – true essence of an Imagineer. Good Journey Skip.

Joseph L. De Meis So sad to hear this news like another star has fallen from heaven. I will always cherish the fun and great time I had with Skip, and Pat Burke building the original model of Big Thunder Railroad. He was an incredible rock sculptor and “Imagineer Extraordinaire.” A person of great talent and role model for all future Walt Diseny Imagineers. Cheers to you Skip!Show less

Todd Gallagher This is very sad news, Skip was an amazing guy to work with. Skip was also a warm and true friend. Some of my best memories of Skip was at his Halloween parties at his house in the canyon with all our fellow WDI crew in the early 80’s. RIP Skip, thank you for touching my life!
